Money raised by Health Lottery North West continues to support Wigan and Leigh Young Carers.
Earlier this year, Wigan and Leigh Young Carers secured funding of £27,578 for the “Healthy Mind, Healthy You” transition project.
Using money raised by Health Lottery North West, this grant was awarded by People’s Health Trust through Active Communities, a funding programme which invests in local people and groups in communities, with great ideas to make their communities even better.
This two-year project is the expansion of work which supports young adult carers (aged 14-24) living in the Wigan Borough, particularly those who are most isolated and with limited social, educational and employment opportunities. The project provides peer support groups and residential breaks promoting friendships and encouraging participants to achieve through engagement and training. It is hoped the regular sessions will strengthen participants’ wellbeing, mental health, and life chances. The young adult carers shape the project via a steering group/forum of participants, discussions with group leaders, and questionnaires.
Paul Carroll from Wigan and Leigh Young Carers says: “We are delighted to have received more funding for this extremely important project. We know from talking to young carers, that this support, at such a critical time in their lives is invaluable to them.”
“Here at Wigan and Leigh Young Carers we are always looking for volunteer support, if you would like to know more about our current opportunities, please contact Paul Carroll on 01942 679352 or visit www.walyc.org.uk”
Chris Lunn, Director of Health Lottery North West, said: “We are thrilled that money raised by Health Lottery North West is supporting such an important local project.”
